How to Organize Your Self Storage Unit Efficiently

A self-storage unit can be a great transitional space in which to store belongings that don't fit in your home, are of a seasonal nature, or are in limbo as you move. For the storage unit to function efficiently, you need to have an organization system in place. You have to imagine it as a small room that can easily become a chaotic mess if you don't take steps to make it orderly. Here are some pointers to help you keep it together—both physically and mentally.

Plan Your Layout

Plan how you're going to arrange your storage unit before you put anything in it. Think about how often you will need to get to specific things and put them near the front, with the items that you don't need to access often pushed back toward the back wall. If you don't plan and just start filling the unit in a haphazard way, you are going to waste time and possibly get pretty frustrated when you have to go back into the unit to get something that you should have stored toward the front.

Use Uniform Boxes

To maximize your storage space, using uniform boxes is key. When you use boxes that are all the same size, it becomes easy to stack them. And when you stack them, you use vertical space, which is often the most underappreciated space in any room. Once you've got your boxes stacked, label each one clearly so that the contents are identifiable from any side of the box.

Utilize Shelving

Free-standing shelving in your storage unit can help to make the most of vertical space and keep things organized. It is particularly well-suited to small tools and items you need to access regularly that would otherwise get lost amid the clutter. Just make sure it is adequately anchored, and also that your items are actually on the shelves and not on the floor beneath them.

Create Aisles

With larger storage units, it's a good idea to create aisles for better navigation and easier access to items when you need them. To do this, simply leave a clear path through the center or along the side of your unit, allowing you to reach boxes and other belongings at the back without having to remove everything from the front.

Protect Your Items

For items that could be prone to dampness, use sturdy plastic bins. For anything breakable, bubble wrap is your best friend. You can also use packing paper, but be careful—packing paper really isn't as good as bubble wrap. For storage, that is. If you use packing paper, crumple it as you would if you were using bubble wrap, and don't stretch it tight and flat. Then, put the wrapped item in a box and stack it (if necessary) in such a way that it's just above the last human height you can reach comfortably. Make sure your belongings are safe and sound to prevent any possible harm while they're in storage.

Keep an Inventory

Keeping a current inventory list of everything in your storage unit can be a huge time-saver when you need to access something particular. You should include in the inventory every box, its contents, and its precise location in the unit. You might also add some important details about the items that would jog your memory if you were to look at the list.

Your storage requirements might alter over time; therefore, it's wise to make periodic trips to your storage unit to reorganize and refresh your inventory list. This not only guarantees that the unit continues to serve your needs but also assures that all the items in it are easy to find.

If you follow the advice given here, you will have a storage unit that is straightforward, orderly, and, most important of all, easy to access. You can have such a unit even if the amount of stuff you must store is large. You can achieve this with a combination of good storage unit architecture, good storage unit furniture, and good packing techniques.
